Why It’s So Hard to Stick to Habits (and How to Finally Do It)

Apr 02, 2026

Most people do not struggle to start habits.

They struggle to continue them.

At the beginning, motivation feels strong. You feel excited. You have a plan. You feel ready to change. But then life happens. Energy drops. Schedules get busy. Progress feels slow. And suddenly the question shows up:

Why can I never stick with anything?

In Episode 13 of the Grounded Growth Podcast, Nicole and Stephanie talk honestly about why habits feel hard to maintain and why the problem usually is not discipline. It is unrealistic expectations.

Because motivation was never meant to carry the whole journey.

Motivation Is Not the Problem

One of the biggest mindset shifts in this episode is understanding that motivation fading is normal.

It happens to everyone.

When motivation drops, many women assume something is wrong with them. They begin to believe they lack consistency or follow through. But the truth is much simpler.

Motivation is only the starting spark. Habits are what carry you when motivation fades.

Instead of asking why motivation disappeared, the better question becomes:

What habits support me when motivation is low?

That shift alone changes everything.

The All or Nothing Trap

Another major reason habits fail is all or nothing thinking.

If we miss a day, we think we failed. If we cannot do it perfectly, we stop completely. If we cannot do the full routine, we do nothing instead.

But growth rarely disappears slowly. Most of the time we simply stop showing up.

This episode reminds us that showing up imperfectly still counts.

Five minutes still counts.
One small action still counts.
Starting again still counts.

Consistency is not about perfect streaks. It is about returning again and again.

Keep It Simple Enough to Sustain

Nicole shares the importance of keeping habits simple enough that you can continue even on hard days.

Not the ideal version.
The realistic version.

Because complicated routines often fail when life gets busy. Simple rhythms are what remain.

The goal is not to build impressive systems. The goal is to build sustainable ones.

Stephanie reinforces this by encouraging listeners to remove the pressure of perfection and focus on simply returning after missing a day.

Missing once does not stop growth.

Quitting does.

Faith and Habits

This episode also highlights how faith plays a role in growth rhythms.

Faith reminds us we are not meant to be perfect. We are meant to be faithful.

Returning again.
Trying again.
Growing slowly.

Even small steps matter when they are taken consistently.

Growth is not built through dramatic changes. It is built through daily decisions to keep going.

Start Smaller Than You Think

If you want habits to last, start smaller than you think you should.

One habit.
One change.
One small return this week.

Nicole and Stephanie both emphasize that you do not need to fix everything at once. Start with one simple habit and let momentum grow from there.

Because grounded growth is not built through pressure.

It is built through persistence.
